Stanford & SAP / Future Shopping Experience
SAP (the German software company) asked us to develop the Future Retail Experience. We worked closely with them throughout the project. The work was conducted by a global projects team (University of St. Gallen - Switzerland, SAP - Regensdorf, Stanford University - USA). I developed my team-working skills collaborating in a multi-functional, multi-lingual and geographically dispersed team. We got a open brief that told us to create the Future Shopping Experience. From that we had to develop a problem statement and vision. We worked with a user-centered design approach, we went shopping with people. We collected information and trends online and offline. We asked questions such as; Where do people make a purchase? What is a good experience? We looked, filmed and interviewed to collect data to analyze. The initial face was to benchmark technologies and at the same time look for opportunities. We often prototyped and presented scenarios by making videos. Later on we prototyped hardware and a graphical user interface. The final iterations was a physical prototype with RFID-technology and a 3D rendered video displaying the future of retailing. The concept showed how online stores, trendsetters and peer user-data could be presented in the actual store to help the consumer with the purchase decision. One of our key findings was that the most important room in a clothing store was the fitting room. A room that usually got far to little attention. After our work we reflected on our process and by request from SAP shipped our prototype to to Zurich for display in the SAP Future Retail Center.
